Read part 1 - how the bill got out of committee
Read part 2 - how two North Omaha senators changed their votes
Earlier this year the Nebraska legislature passed, and the governor signed LB77 into law and wiped out all city firearm ordinances (firearm preemption) across the state. As of September 2nd, this is now enacted.
To the 33 senators that passed this bill, every single day they may each look in the mirror knowing that they could have stopped this. On the filibuster vote the day this bill was passed by the legislature, they needed 33 and they have 33. One person could have changed the outcome. The list includes women, men, all Republicans, one Democrat, rural, and a whole lot of Omaha senators.
May they forever feel shame for their vote.
Melody Vaccaro shows us how it’s done.
What’s next?
People who stalk, falsely imprison others, violate protection orders, impersonate police, debauch minors, entice children, and so much more will get their guns back in Lincoln because Section 9.36.100 is nullified
Open carry will no longer require training and background checks in Omaha as Section 20.192 is nullified
York may not be able to require businesses to have security alarms as Section 4.5-10 is nullified
Nobody in the state is required to have training and a background check to carry a gun at your local grocery store.
You can read overviews on why firearm preemption bills are bad for public health like this story about Louisville.
You can look at Southern Poverty Law and see that there are 12 known hate groups in Nebraska that we need to disarm instead of empower.
One can see the very obvious nazi gun tower that Omaha police work with and have grave concerns that arming more people with less roadblocks will put us all in more danger.
What can we do?
Mayors of Nebraskas cities, trying to lower gun deaths, gun trafficking, and ensure public safety can join other mayors in the country begging for their power back, which is unlikely to ever happen. Cities like Louisville, Kentucky who remains powerless to address violence in their city.
As for the rest of us, we are the majority. We will never stop standing up for children and public safety. We will never be bullied into silence. Together, we can stop gun violence but the fight just got harder.
We shame the Nebraska legislature and the governor for putting their love of a commercial product over the safety and welfare of the public, children, and common sense.
